Introduction to Bioinformatics and Databases Module

Synopsis

This module contains a basic introduction to bioinformatics goals and methods and a focus on database architecture and advancements. It contains information on basic concepts in genetics involved in bioinformatics, as well as an overview of replication, translation, and other genetic processes occuring in cells. The purpose of this module is to familiarize students with the basics of bioinformatics and some basic genetic concepts.

This module also focuses on the database architecture and advancements and how they are being integrated into bioinformatics problems. Specifically, the level of integration needed in bioinformatics encompassing DNA, protein, structure, and successful bioinformatics discovery. The purpose of this module is to expose students to the various database related techniques such as indexing, global object name resolution through universal accession numbers, schema matching, database mirroring and rationalization, etc., that are utilized to overcome the challenges related to large scale information integration and data sharing.

The lecture that this module will present provides a summary of the various goals and methods used in bioinformatics and genetics, and a summary of the various databases used in bioinformatics as well as their approach to presenting the underlying data.
